About Director of R&D

A senior leadership role responsible for driving innovation, designing new product lines, and optimizing manufacturing processes. This role merges technical engineering expertise with creative design to ensure products are functional, aesthetic, cost-effective, and aligned with market trends.

What You Will Do

• Strategic Leadership & Innovation
  • Develop R&D Strategies: Create and implement long-term strategies for product development, material innovation, and technology integration to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Drive Product Roadmap: Lead the conceptualization, design, and prototyping of new furniture lines based on market research and consumer preferences.
  • Trend Analysis: Analyze global design trends, materials, and technologies to anticipate market needs.
• Product Development & Engineering
  • Oversee Design Process: Manage the transition from concept to production, including technical drawings, CAD modeling, and rendering.
  • Prototype Testing: Lead in-house testing for structural integrity, durability, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Manufacturing Feasibility: Collaborate with production teams to ensure new designs are efficient to manufacture, reducing waste and cost.
• Project & Team Management
  • Manage R&D Team: Lead, mentor, and direct a team of designers, engineers, and technicians, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Budget Oversight: Manage R&D budgets, resource allocation, and project timelines.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with marketing, sales, sourcing, and quality control departments to ensure alignment on product launches.
• Quality & Compliance
  • Technical Documentation: Ensure accuracy in Product Information Sheets, Bills of Materials (BOM), and assembly instructions.
  • Regulatory Standards: Ensure all products comply with environmental, safety, and industry regulations.

Key Qualifications

• Experience: 5-10+ years in furniture design, product development, or engineering, with significant experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical/Industrial), Product Design, Furniture Design, or a related field.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.), technical drawing, and knowledge of materials (wood, metal, upholstery).
• Leadership Skills: Proven experience in team management, strategic planning, and project management.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, and move for extended periods, including walking through office and warehouse spaces.
• Frequent use of hands and fingers for computer work, sketching, and handling material samples.
• Occasional lifting and carrying of materials, samples, and product prototypes.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally for supplier visits, trade shows, and design development meetings.
• Visual acuity to assess product details, colors, and finishes accurately.
• Ability to adapt to various work environments, including office settings and warehouses.
• Occasional bending, kneeling, or reaching to inspect products or review samples.
